In 1996 when the 49ers went to a new jersey design. They started the year with a different, wider number font. On an October 14th MNF game (Week7), they altered the font and made the numbers thinner.
The only effect on the 1s was making them thinner. However the difference can be seen in comparing numbers like 8.
The wider numbers had the insides of the 8s with the corners cut. The thinner numbers had perfect squares inside the 8s.
